Who is the course for?

This course is designed for people who are new to a management role, or people who have some management experience but have had no training.

The course is initially open to Casework supervisors who are part of the Propel project and other casework supervisors/managers in DDPOs who manage advice workers.

Please note this course is focused on managing paid staff members, not volunteers.

About the course

This course will equip managers in the voluntary sector with the skills and techniques they need to effectively manage paid members of staff. It focuses on the manager’s role in supporting their staff development and potential, as well as supervising their performance.

  • Behaviours that build trust (and their opposites)
  • What motivates different people
  • Tools for setting objectives collaboratively
  • Techniques to support staff wellbeing and looking after ourselves
  • Assertive approaches
  • Practice giving and receiving feedback
  • Applying coaching principles to managing people
  • Exploring how to delegate effectively
  • Developing your team – effective one-to-ones
  • How to manage and run team meetings in hybrid working/reasonable adjustments
  • Identifying how to manage performance
  • Dealing with tricky situations

Delivered by:
Jane Townsend on behalf of NCVO. Jane is an Associate Consultant with NCVO, with a background in training and coaching managers and supervisors in people development and management skills. She has worked with managers across a wide range of sectors, and workplace environments.

Deaf and Disabled People Organisations (DDPOs) are organisations that are run and controlled by Deaf/Disabled people, with Deaf/Disabled people representing at least 75% of Trustees and over 50% of paid staff.
