This resource will help you understand why sport and physical activity should be on a Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation’s (DDPO) agenda and the important role DDPOs can play in ensuring that local sport and physical activity (SPA) becomes fully inclusive.
It is based on the experiences of five London DDPOs involved in Into Sport, a project funded over three years by Sport England to get inactive Disabled people engaged in SPA. All the examples and case studies are based on the first-hand experiences of Deaf and Disabled people living in Barnet, Greenwich, Lambeth, Richmond and Southwark.
- Why should SPA be viewed as a rights and equality issue for Disabled people?
- Why are DDPOs well positioned to support inactive Disabled people to get involved in SPA?
- What are the barriers currently facing Disabled people trying to engage in SPA and what solutions have DDPOs developed?
- What steps can policy makers, funders and SPA providers take to increase the number of Disabled people engaging in SPA?
YES WE CAN! will answer all these questions and more. Illustrated with photographs taken during the Into Sport project and covering a range of issues, including current policy on SPA and Deaf and Disabled people, how DDPOs can embed SPA across their other services (including funding opportunities to support this) and how DDPOs are breaking down barriers to SPA, this resource will help anyone wanting to support Disabled people to get active, including DDPOs, SPA providers and other stakeholders.
With thanks to the Into Sport partners:
