Universal Credit (UC) – intermediate level course

Disability Law Service free Webinar for DDPO staff working with Universal Credit claims (please note this event has moved from 14 January)

This course will be delivered by webinar. This course is FREE.

Thursday 25 February 2021 at 1.30pm to 4.30pm (3 hours) – two 15-minute breaks

Who is the course for?

This course is for DDPO staff and volunteers who already have some experience of supporting UC claims.

Please note: maximum 20 places, these will initially be offered to people who are part of the SVRR project.

What is a DDPO?

Please note this is an event for Deaf and Disabled People Organisations (DDPOs). DDPOs are organisations that are run and controlled by Deaf/Disabled people, with Deaf/Disabled people representing at least 75% of Trustees and over 50% of paid staff.

Course outline

This training will cover:

  • Eligibility for UC.
  • How to apply – tips and hints.
  • Payable elements – single/couple claimants, child elements, disability elements (LCW/LCWRA), child care costs.
  • Claimant commitment – vulnerable claimants, LCW, LCWRA. Looking at how disabled claimants can protect themselves.
  • Calculations – how UC calculates applicable amounts, grace period, disregards, work allowance, benefit cap etc.
  • Better off calculations and when someone should not claim UC
  • How to make appeals – revisions, HMCTS.
  • Other information.

There will be exercises to help apply the information just learned to real world fictitious scenarios, and up-to-date information in regard to COVID-19.

There are a maximum of 20 places on this course – please only sign up if you are committed to attending. We have recently had a number of non-attendees at courses; we could have offered these places to others.
