Who can attend

The SVRR Legal Briefing is open to all staff and volunteers who deliver advice within a DDPO. Priority for places is given to members of the Strengthening Voices Realising Rights project.

Briefing outline

This briefing will help you to understand The Care Act 2014 legal framework and how to use it in the most effective way to secure rights for the Deaf & Disabled people you support.

We will look at the Local Authority’s role when:

• Assessing needs
• Deciding which needs are eligible
• Deciding how to meet needs
• Calculating how much it will cost
• Calculating how much a person has to contribute
• Setting up a direct payment if needed
• Carrying out reviews and reassessments if required.

After the briefing you will:

• Know and understand the duties and powers of local authorities and the legal instruments that set them
• Understand the process that local authorities must follow at each of the stages above
• Know how to support your clients at each stage.

About the SVRR Project

The SVRR project is funded by Trust for London.
The Trust funds a number of DDPOS to assist them to increase their capacity to deliver information, advice and advocacy to Deaf and Disabled residents. The Trust also funds IL to support these DDPOs and a broader DDPO network where appropriate, to equip them with the practical skills, training, peer support and resources they need to improve and strengthen their advice provision.
