Social Care Charging Policies & Principles, and Disability Related Expenses

Webinar for individuals who deliver advice on social care issues.

Course outline

The Webinar is for DDPO advice and advocacy workers and is an opportunity to hear from Jenny and Karly about their experiences of providing advice and support around Social Care charging and Disability Related Expenses.

Part 1 – Social Care Charging Policies & Principles

Jenny will lead the first part of the Webinar, from 1pm-2.30pm. She will give you an overview of Social Care charging principles and policies including financial assessments. She will look at how they are done in practice based on her experiences in Kensington & Chelsea and what the guidance indicates should be happening.

This will include discussion on: 

  • How to read financial assessments
  • Key areas where they might be challenged
  • How to argue a person cannot afford to pay
  • How to dispute financial assessments

The session will also touch on Disability Related Expenses which will be covered in more detail in Part 2 of the Webinar.

Part 2 – Disability Related Expenses

Karly will lead the second part of the Webinar, from 3pm-4.30pm, and will discuss her experiences of supporting clients to claim Disability Related Expenses as part a social care financial assessment.

This will include discussion on:

  • What is covered by Disability Related Expenses
  • How to calculate and evidence Disability Related Expenses
  • How to help clients identify their Disability Related Expenses
  • How to deal with common challenges, such as an LA saying you can get the item for free or cheaper or that you don’t need to spend money that way
  • The practical steps you can take to take to dispute an LA assessment of Disability Related Expenses.

During each session there will be an opportunity to look at case studies as well as time for questions.
