This training occurs over 2 sessions on 6 July and 7 July 10am-1pm. You must attend both sessions.

Please note: maximum 17 places, these will initially be offered to people who are part of the SVRR project.
Who is this course for?
Level: This course is aimed at DDPO advisers with a working knowledge of Employment & Support Allowance (ESA) and Universal Credit (UC), including of challenging decisions. It concentrates on issues concerning the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) and appeal tactics.
About the course:
Day 1: Tuesday 6th July, 10:00-13.00 including 30 minute break at 11.15
Day 2: Wednesday 7th July, 10:00-13.00 including 30 minute break at 11.15
You should attend both sessions.
The work capability assessment (WCA) applies in both employment and support allowance (ESA) and universal credit (UC). Claimants who fail the WCA can challenge that on appeal, but need support and advice. This course looks at appeal issues and tactics, including the developing body of caselaw.
The course covers:
- Entitlement to benefit while challenging a decision
- Submissions, medical evidence and other tactical issues
- Mandatory reconsideration – problems and practice
- Important work capability assessment caselaw

This course is delivered by Steve Johnson, trainer for Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG).
What is a DDPO?
Please note this is an event for Deaf and Disabled People Organisations (DDPOs). DDPOs are organisations that are run and controlled by Deaf/Disabled people, with Deaf/Disabled people representing at least 75% of Trustees and over 50% of paid staff.
