About this organisation
Metro Blind Sport (Metro) is a sport and social charity that aims to support blind and Visually Impaired(VI) people within London to access sport, physical activity and social events. Currently in our 50th year, Metro has a proven track record of engaging with VI people, through volunteering and sports participation, bringing people together and building friendships.
On the 14th of November 2023, it was announced that Metro will receive the Kings Award in recognition of excellence in voluntary services over the past 50 years. All our employees and 75% of our Board of trustees are VI. Furthermore, all our sports codes are led by sport specific volunteer committees, that are VI, supported by Metro staff.
Fight for Sight’s 2019 survey found that loss of sight combined with wider societal issues, such as barriers to accessing transport, employment and technology, led to 80% of blind and partially sighted people reporting that they were sometimes, often or always lonely. 80% of VI people say they will feel less lonely if they take part in physical activity and sport. Physical activity and sport helps people feel more self confident, have increased mobility and independence, socially integrated can help them to be more employable.
We have a diverse range of sports and social activities that range from participation to competition. These include, amongst others, Athletics, Bowls, Cricket, Football, Goalball, Tennis and Walking.
